Urinary Incontinence

The prevalence of urinary incontinence increases with age, and despite most women’s reluctance to discuss the condition with their doctors, incontinence in general is very common. In addition to being common, urinary incontinence is terribly uncomfortable. There are four types:

• Stress incontinence: Leakage of urine with coughing is usually caused by a lack of support to the bladder or urethra. Caused when one coughs, laughs, or exercises.
• Urge incontinence: This is caused by a strong contraction of the bladder. Exhibited when one has the sudden urge to urinate and cannot make it to the bathroom in time.
• Mixed incontinence: A combination of stress and urge incontinence.
• Overflow incontinence: Caused by the over distention of the bladder and can be related to organ prolapse, spinal cord injury, and diabetes.
